If you’ve ever spent more than ten minutes on Instagram or TikTok, you’re probably aware of the rampant rise of fast fashion. In fact, the fashion industry has grown 400% in the last 20 years.
While this allows us to buy anything we could ever want, and get it in as little as 24 hours without spending more than $20, this level of convenience and selection has a hidden dark side.
Some fun facts for you:
- 11.3 million tons of textile waste end up in U.S. landfills yearly.
- Most clothes are only worn 7-10 times before being discarded.
- 93% of brands in a survey were found to pay their garment workers below a liveable wage—some in Southern California only paid $1.53 per hour.
There is something seriously wrong with the fashion industry.
The mindset of over-consumption and materialism has blinded our society to the damage we have caused to the creation we were given to steward and people we are commanded to love.
When we first started out, we had the option every other new brand has: the easy way. While we could’ve bought the cheapest t-shirts made in factories without environmental or labor regulations and had them screen-printed in mass quantities, we chose to do things a little differently. We chose to be the ANOMALY in not only the fashion industry, but also the Christian fashion industry.
Whether it’s giving garments deemed “trash” or “disposable” a new life or using ethically-sourced and USA-made blanks, we take care to use base garments that do humanity and the environment good. By using thrifted pieces for base garments and appliqué patchwork, we extend the lifespan of clothes, keeping them out of landfills longer.
When manufacturing our pieces in house and by hand, we use many measures to ensure they will last long and not fall apart. (And we will happily repair any piece that does start to wear and tear a bit!)
And while it takes at least an hour to craft each piece, we still choose to pay our production girls a fair rate and provide a healthy work environment.
Did you know that there used to be 4 seasons in the fashion world, which have now been expanded to 52? Well, not at ANOMALY CO. We curate only a few collections per calendar year to ensure each collection is extremely thought out and to minimize the over-consuming mindset we’ve been conditioned to operate in.
All this to say, there is a better way to do fashion. A way that honors the Lord and displays His love, care, and intentionality.
We strive to be the ANOMALY in the fashion industry by giving unwanted materials new life, designing and manufacturing for longevity, and promoting conscious consumption over materialism.
